Daily Prompt: Bone of Contention

Prompt from here.
A short fic.

The lie rolled out of his tongue smoother than he expected.
He smiled, slowly releasing her hands;
His eyes didn’t leave the little diamond perching on her finger.

He was never a good liar before.
But things happened.
She happened.
And by then, he just wanted her so bad.

Even without seeing, he knew she was disbelieved.
From her silence, he knew she was torn.
From her trembling fingers, he knew that she was expecting something else.
She was expecting him to hold her, telling her that she made the wrong decision.
She was expecting him to  say anything but that.

He looked up –
Only to see her looking down, her tears dropping to the floor.

But he was a good liar now.
Things happened.
She happened.
And by now, he just wanted her to be happy.

So when she asked,
‘Do you still love me?’
He merely said,
‘I’m happy for you.’

That was how far she had changed him.
